There are approximately two types of people once August starts winding down: the ones desperately holding onto summer and the ones who have already decided it’s fall.
I’ll let you guess which one I am.
For me, fall is less about one specific scent and more about all of the little things that make the season feel like fall — the first chilly morning, something baking in the oven, way too many pumpkins on the porch, coffee shop afternoons, changing leaves, and finally having an excuse to light a candle before dinner.
That’s really what inspired this year’s fall collection.
There are the classic pumpkin and bakery scents, of course, but there are also smoky, woodsy, coffee-inspired and slightly moodier options for anyone who loves fall but doesn’t necessarily want their entire house to smell like pumpkin spice.
So if you’re looking for your new favorite fall candle scent, here’s where I’d start.
If pumpkin season can’t come soon enough: Pumpkin Chai
If you’re ordering the pumpkin drink the second it appears on the menu, Pumpkin Chai is probably your scent.
It blends cardamom, pumpkin and cinnamon sugar for that unmistakably cozy fall feeling, but it’s not just another super-sweet pumpkin candle. The chai spices give it more warmth and depth and make it one I want burning basically as soon as the weather starts cooling down.
Light this one for pumpkin-patch days, slow mornings and the first actually-chilly night of the season.
Scent notes: Cardamom + pumpkin + cinnamon sugar
Try this if you’re searching for: a pumpkin candle, chai candle, spicy fall candle or classic autumn scent.

If you want your house to smell like you’ve been baking all day: Brown Sugar Biscuit
This is the candle for making your house smell ridiculously good without actually turning on the oven.
Brown Sugar Biscuit is warm, buttery and sweet, with cinnamon, sugar and clove giving it just enough spice. It has that fresh-from-the-oven bakery feeling without leaning into pumpkin or apple.
If your favorite fall days involve baking something from scratch and staying home while it’s chilly outside, this one just makes sense.
Scent notes: Cinnamon + sugar + clove
Try this if you love: gourmand candles, bakery scents, brown sugar, warm spices and sweet fall fragrances.
The one for banana bread season: Spiced Banana Bread
You know the bananas that have been sitting on your counter for three days past the point where anyone is willing to eat them?
This is their season.
Spiced Banana Bread smells like the cozy part of making banana bread: warm banana, walnut and buttery spice. It’s sweet and nostalgic without crossing over into artificial banana candy territory.
This is easily one of my picks for anyone who wants a true bakery-inspired fall candle.
Scent notes: Banana + walnut + buttery spice
Try this if you love: banana bread, gourmand fragrances, bakery candles and warm kitchen scents.

For rainy afternoons and coffee shop weather: Enchanted Grounds
There is something about sitting in a coffee shop while it’s gray and rainy outside that just feels like fall.
Enchanted Grounds bottles that feeling with espresso, smokey woods and leather. The coffee comes through, but the woods and leather keep it from smelling like a sugary coffee drink.
It’s richer and moodier than the bakery scents in the collection, and I especially love it for mornings, work-from-home days and rainy afternoons.
Scent notes: Espresso + smokey woods + leather
Try this if you love: coffee scented candles, café-inspired fragrances, leather, woods and deeper fall scents.
When you want cozy without smelling like dessert: Maple Cashmere
If you like the feeling of gourmand scents but don't necessarily want your house smelling like baked goods, meet Maple Cashmere.
It blends maple, vanilla cream and warm milk into something soft, creamy and cozy. Think blankets, movie nights, warm drinks and absolutely nowhere you need to be.
There’s sweetness here, but the overall scent feels much softer than a traditional bakery candle.
Scent notes: Maple + vanilla cream + warm milk
Try this if you love: vanilla candles, maple scents, creamy fragrances and softer cozy fall scents.
For nights around the campfire: Toasted Tales
Toasted Tales is where fall gets a little smokier.
With campfire smoke, toasted sugar and caramel, it has the sweetness you’d expect from a gourmand fall candle, but the smoke keeps it from becoming overly sugary.
It reminds me of staying outside way too late around a fire, roasting something sweet and telling stories once it gets dark.
Scent notes: Campfire smoke + toasted sugar + caramel
Try this if you love: smoky candles, campfire scents, toasted marshmallow-type fragrances and sweet-but-smoky fall scents.

When spooky season is the main event: Haunted Library
And then we get to the moodier side of the collection.
Haunted Library is aged pages, incense and tobacco — warm, atmospheric and a little mysterious. No pumpkin. No baked goods. No cinnamon-sugar kitchen.
Think old bookshelves, dim lighting, rainy evenings and somewhere that may or may not be haunted.
If you’ve been looking for a unique fall candle that isn't sweet, this is where I’d point you first.
Scent notes: Aged pages + incense + tobacco
Try this if you love: dark academia scents, bookish candles, incense, tobacco and moody fall fragrances.

When you just want it to smell like a crisp fall evening: Twilight Grove
Not every fall candle needs to smell edible.
Twilight Grove is the outdoorsier side of fall, blending crisp air, cardamom and sandalwood. It reminds me of those perfect few weeks when the leaves have finally changed, the air actually feels cold, and taking a walk outside suddenly sounds better than staying in.
It’s earthy and warm with some spice, but decidedly less sweet than most traditional fall fragrances.
Scent notes: Crisp air + cardamom + sandalwood
Try this if you love: woodsy fall candles, sandalwood, earthy fragrances and non-gourmand fall scents.

Still Can't Decide? Start Here.
If you've made it through eight scents and somehow that made choosing harder, here's the short version:
Warm + bakery: Brown Sugar Biscuit or Spiced Banana Bread
Classic fall: Pumpkin Chai
Coffee + moody: Enchanted Grounds
Soft + creamy: Maple Cashmere
Sweet + smoky: Toasted Tales
Dark + atmospheric: Haunted Library
Earthy + woodsy: Twilight Grove
And if you're still between a few, this is exactly why I make the Fall Candle Sampler and Fall Wax Melt Sampler. You can try the collection before deciding which scents deserve a full-size spot in your house.
What Makes Thread & Crumb Candles Different?
Fall fragrance is only part of the equation.
Thread & Crumb candles are hand-poured in Iowa in small batches using our signature beeswax + grass-fed tallow wax blend, 100% cotton wicks and phthalate-free fragrance oils.
I wanted to create fall candles that feel nostalgic and seasonal without every scent becoming another version of pumpkin spice.
Because maybe fall smells like pumpkin chai to you.
Or maybe it smells like old books, espresso, banana bread or a campfire after dark.
Either way, there’s a candle (or melt) for that.
